TAIPEI (TVBS News) — Taipei Metro (臺北捷運) announced on Friday (Nov. 29) that it will not adjust metro fares but will modify its frequent rider discount program to ensure sustainable operations. The adjustments will change the discount rate from 30% to 10% to 15% and aim to minimize impact.
Facing pressures from rising electricity costs and wage increases, Taipei Metro anticipates a potential deficit in 2025. This financial gap could affect the safety and service quality of the metro system in the long run, according to the company.
The revised discount program is expected to affect 300,000 passengers to varying degrees. For commuters paying NT$20 per ride and traveling 50 times a month, the monthly rebate will drop from NT$250 to NT$150, effectively reducing the rebate by NT$2 per ride.
The NT$1,200 monthly pass will remain unchanged to encourage more people to use it. Taipei Metro will submit the proposal to the city government and expect to implement it in the first half of next year.
