TAIPEI (TVBS News) — The Executive Yuan's Anti-Fraud Command Center (行政院打詐指揮中心) announced Wednesday (Nov. 20) that authorities have seized over NT$20.122 billion in illicit gains from telecom and online fraud since June 2023. The government has intercepted NT$12.89 billion in attempted fraud at financial counters, demonstrating a robust crackdown on scams.
During this period, the center reached 1.8203 billion people with fraud prevention information and blocked over 16.969 million spoofed international calls and 12.292 million malicious texts. The center emphasized the new cabinet's commitment to combating fraud, enacting new laws to increase penalties for fraud, and managing critical industries from the source, including financial institutions, telecom companies, and online ad platforms.
The government is developing the Next-generation Anti-Fraud Strategy Guidelines 2.0 (新世代打擊詐欺策略行動綱領2.0), adding a "fraud prevention" aspect. The Ministry of Digital Affairs (MODA, 數位發展部) will lead this initiative, focusing on digital economy governance, with implementation set for Jan. 2025.
The center pledged to continue exploring preventive measures and gather input from various sectors to safeguard citizens' assets. However, RWnews (菱傳媒) reported Wednesday that fraud losses in Taiwan reached NT$12 billion in October. In October, the Global Anti-Scam Alliance (GASO) highlighted that over 40% of Asians encounter scams monthly, underlining the global fraud challenge.
