TAIPEI (TVBS News) — The chairman of the Taipei City Egg Merchants Association (台北市蛋商業同業公會) expressed optimism on Tuesday (Nov. 12) about the egg market's future despite recent price hikes. The chairman of the Taipei City Egg Merchants Association, Lin Tien-lai (林天來), emphasized that eliminating older hens and establishing a robust market mechanism could alleviate current challenges.
Egg prices have risen for two consecutive weeks yet remain below production costs due to increased feed and other expenses. This has led to concerns about persistently low prices over the next three years. Social media platforms have seen a surge in listings from small egg farms, housing 20,000 to 30,000 hens, as they struggle with cost pressures and choose to cease operations.
Lin noted that new large-scale poultry farms, with hundreds of thousands of hens, are pressuring traditional farms. He said typhoons have exacerbated small farms' difficulties by impacting feed prices. Lin pointed out that current egg prices should be gradually adjusted according to market trends and asserted that egg prices should not decrease simply because eggs are abundant.
Regarding future price trends, Lin believes market saturation requires time to adjust. He remains confident, stating that the egg market will gradually recover as older hens are phased out.
