TAIPEI (TVBS News) — The student group EdYouth (臺灣一滴優教育協會) raised concerns on Monday (Nov. 11) about the current regulations requiring individuals to be at least 18 years old to engage in telecommunication counseling with psychologists. They argue that this restriction prevents teenagers from choosing a safe and comfortable space for their sessions, potentially leaving younger individuals underserved.
Tsai Chi-yeh (蔡其曄), the chairman of EdYouth, emphasized the need for legislative reform by the Ministry of Health and Welfare (MOHW, 衛福部). Tsai highlighted that the existing rules might cause those under 18, especially students in non-metropolitan areas, to miss out on necessary counseling services. He noted that telecommunication counseling provides greater accessibility for these students.
Tsai believes that the decision to use telecommunication counseling should rest on the professional judgment of psychologists. He expressed hope that the Legislative Yuan (立法院) will assist in negotiating with the MOHW to address this issue.
EdYouth organized a mental health seminar on Nov. 10, inviting high school and university students to participate. Through interactive sessions, attendees delved into mental health topics to foster societal attention on telecommunication counseling and encourage legislative and policy advancements.
