TAIPEI (TVBS News) — Typhoon Kong-rey (康芮) intensified into a strong typhoon on Wednesday (Oct. 30) morning, threatening Taiwan with a 100% storm strike probability in 13 regions.
The Central Weather Administration (CWA, 中央氣象署) reported that the 13 areas, including Taichung City (台中市), Changhua County (彰化縣), and Tainan City (台南市), face a 100% chance of storm impact. New Taipei City (新北市) and Taipei City (台北市) face over a 90% chance of being hit, possibly leading to a shutdown of schools and businesses on Thursday.
According to the latest forecast from the CWA, the typhoon's center was located approximately 520 kilometers southeast of Cape Eluanbi (鵝鑾鼻) at 8 a.m. The storm is moving northwest at speeds of 15 to 20 kph.
The CWA has expanded land warnings to include Taitung (台東), the Hengchun Peninsula (恆春半島), Hualien (花蓮), and Pingtung (屏東). The sea warning covers the Taiwan Strait, eastern Taiwan waters, the Bashi Channel (巴士海峽), and Dongsha Island (東沙島), advising extreme caution for vessels in these areas.
As Kong-rey approaches, residents should stay updated on weather advisories and prepare for potential disruptions, the CWA urged.
