TAIPEI (TVBS News) — Premier Cho Jung-tai (卓榮泰) on Tuesday (Oct. 29) announced plans to promote geothermal and other renewable energy sources, aiming for a 30% green energy share by 2030. Cho outlined these initiatives in a report to the Legislative Yuan (立法院) on energy and electricity pricing policies, emphasizing the government's commitment to sustainable energy development.
Cho detailed the government's strategy to regularly review electricity demand and plan power development, targeting a 30% share for green energy, 20% for coal, and 50% for natural gas by 2030. He highlighted significant growth in renewable energy capacity, which increased from 4.73 gigawatts in 2016 to 17.96 gigawatts by the end of 2023. More importantly, electricity generation from renewables rose from 12.73 billion kilowatt-hours to 26.87 billion kilowatt-hours, marking a notable expansion.
Cho also stressed the government's ongoing efforts to combat illegal activities in the green energy sector. Authorities launched the "Platform for Combating Crimes Hindering Green Energy Industry Development" (打擊妨害綠能產業發展犯罪聯繫平台) in August 2021, which has investigated 136 cases and seized illicit gains.
Moreover, in June, the Supreme Prosecutors Office (最高檢察署), in collaboration with the Investigation Bureau (調查局) and the Agency Against Corruption (廉政署), conducted a special operation targeting green energy crimes.
