KINMEN (TVBS News) — President Lai Ching-te (賴清德) commemorated the 75th anniversary of the Battle of Guningtou (古寧頭戰役) on Friday (Oct. 25) at the Kinmen Taiwushan Cemetery (金門太武山公墓).
President Lai, who took office on May 20, has visited Kinmen twice in his first year, marking a historic first for the nation. He previously presided over the commemoration of the "823 Artillery Bombardment" (八二三砲戰).
Accompanied by Kinmen County Commissioner Chen Fu-hai (陳福海), President Lai paid tribute to the fallen soldiers by offering incense and flowers. After the ceremony, Lai expressed gratitude to the veterans for their service in defending the nation. He shook hands, exchanged words, and took photos with the heroes present.
The Ministry of National Defense (MND, 國防部) organized the event, inviting 20 veterans and 17 family members to Kinmen from Taichung and Kaohsiung. President Lai will address the veterans and their families during a luncheon at the Golden Lake Hotel, and his remarks are anticipated by both sides of the Taiwan Strait.
