TAIPEI (TVBS News) — The Northern Region Water Resources Branch (WRANB, 水利署北區水資源分署) announced on Wednesday (Oct. 23) that Typhoon Trami (潭美) could bring significant rainfall to northern Taiwan despite not making direct landfall.
The agency closely monitors the typhoon's path and assures that water conditions in Taoyuan (桃園) and Hsinchu (新竹) remain favorable, meeting the water demands of residents, agriculture, and industry.
Both Shihmen Reservoir (石門水庫) and Hsinchu's Baoshan Second Reservoir (寶二水庫) have reached full capacity. The branch expects stable water supply even with increased demand from late October to late November due to the typhoon and autumn northeast monsoon rains. Officials maintain a cautiously optimistic outlook on future water conditions, urging the public to remain calm.
Since the start of this year's flood season, the branch has activated typhoon response mechanisms. Following Typhoon Trami's formation east of the Philippines on Tuesday, officials have continued flood inspections and monitoring to ensure reservoir safety. They have also coordinated with Taiwan Water Corporation (台水公司) to confirm that water supply facilities are ready to maintain stability during the typhoon.
Officials will track Trami's path and adjust reservoir operations as necessary, including controlled releases to increase flood retention capacity. This proactive approach aims to enhance flood safety and ensure a stable water supply.
