TAIPEI (TVBS News) — Tainan mayor expressed concerns on Tuesday (Oct. 22) about the city's electricity supply, stating he cannot guarantee a power shortage-free future.
Tainan leads the nation in industrial electricity consumption, yet its self-sufficiency rate remains between 25% and 27%. This has prompted city council members to demand a clear stance and concrete measures from the city government.
Tainan Mayor Huang Wei-che (黃偉哲) emphasized a neutral approach to the electricity issue. Tainan consumes 32.8 billion kilowatt-hours annually, generating only about 8.9 billion kilowatt-hours locally. Huang pointed out that developing new energy sources is crucial to prevent power shortages.
Southern Taiwan Science Park (南科) is expected to surpass NT$2 trillion in output value this year. Councilor Li Wei-chi (李偉智) noted that while Tainan benefits from the park, the insufficient electricity self-sufficiency rate could hinder development.
The Bureau of Economic Development (經發局) reported an increased demand for green electricity as global tech giants establish operations in the city. As of this year, Tainan leads the nation with a solar photovoltaic capacity of 4.6 GW.
The Bureau of Economic Development also announced plans to designate "electricity facility land" (電力設施用地) within industrial zones to ensure power enterprises can access these areas.
