TAIPEI (TVBS News) — Taiwan's National Immigration Agency (NIA, 移民署) on Sunday (Oct. 13) ordered a 48-year-old Spanish national, who has resided in Taiwan for five years, to leave the country by Oct. 23, after learning he is wanted in Italy for a car rental fraud case involving approximately NT$1.05 billion.
Interpol's information revealed Salvador Alejandro Llinas Onate arrived in Taiwan in 2019 under family reunification and obtained a residence permit in 2021. However, Taiwan's law enforcement cannot take action against him since he has committed no crimes locally, and Interpol has not requested assistance.
The NIA confirmed Onate's status as a red notice subject and monitored his whereabouts. The NIA expressed concerns about Onate's potential threat to Taiwan's national interests, public safety, or order due to his involvement in serious crimes abroad.
As per the Immigration Act (入出國及移民法), these concerns justify prohibiting his entry. The agency, under Article 36, Section 2 of the act, can enforce deportation but has allowed Onate time to arrange care for his minor children in Taiwan.
Under the regulations for the mandatory deportation of foreigners, the NIA can issue an exit order within ten days. To ensure compliance with the law and address family considerations, they have set the deadline for Onate's departure as Oct. 23.
