TAICHUNG (TVBS News) — Taichung (台中市) is ranked as the fourth most congested city in Asia, according to TomTom Traffic Index. This ranking aligns with Taiwan's Ministry of Transportation and Communications (交通部) statistics from January to July, which show Taichung leading in overall traffic fatalities and pedestrian deaths.
For the first seven months of 2024, Taichung recorded 175 traffic-related deaths, the highest among Taiwan's cities, followed by Kaohsiung (高雄市) with 173 and Taoyuan (桃園市) with 166. Meanwhile, the pedestrian death toll in Taichung not only topped all cities but also showed the largest increase compared to the same period last year.
TomTom's ranking, based on anonymous driver data within a 5-kilometer radius of city centers, placed Taichung fourth with an average travel time of 26 minutes and 50 seconds for a 10-kilometer journey. Kaohsiung ranked sixth at 26 minutes, Tainan (台南市) tenth at 22 minutes and 10 seconds, while Taipei (台北市) narrowly missed the top 10, coming in eleventh at 21 minutes and 50 seconds.
