TAIPEI (TVBS News) — The Ministry of Labor (MOL, 勞動部) announced on Monday (Oct. 7) that it is revising guidelines to better protect the rights of migrant workers and their families. These guidelines will address the needs of migrant workers during pregnancy, childbirth, and child-rearing stages, providing essential resources and advice for workers, employers, and agencies.

The ministry has convened twice with the Ministry of Health and Welfare (MOHW, 衛福部), the National Immigration Agency (NIA, 移民署), and representatives from migrant workers' home countries to discuss these guidelines. Officials are reportedly working to finalize and implement the revisions swiftly. They emphasized that employers could consult local long-term care management centers for support services if a migrant worker cannot work during pregnancy or after childbirth.

Employers and migrant workers can mutually agree to terminate employment contracts legally, allowing both parties to seek new opportunities. However, the ministry warned against dismissals based on pregnancy or childbirth, as this violates gender equality laws. Workers needing assistance with childcare can contact the 1955 hotline or access services from local governments.

Since 2021, the ministry has established three consultation centers for migrant workers in Taoyuan City, Changhua County, and Kaohsiung City, aiding nearly 200 individuals this year. The ministry also offers support for migrant workers and their families wishing to return home, helping with identity and travel documents through their home country's offices in Taiwan.
