TAIPEI (TVBS News) — Taiwanese table tennis player Cheng I-Ching (鄭怡靜) on Tuesday (Oct. 1) advanced to the women's singles round of 16 at the WTT China Smash (WTT中國大滿貫) with a straight-sets victory over Dutch player Britt Eerland.
Cheng secured the first set 12-10, dominated the second set 11-4, and overcame resistance in the third set to win 11-7. Cheng will face either Austria's Sofia Polcanova or China's Wang Xiao-tong (王曉彤) in the next round.
In mixed doubles, Chen Szu-yu (陳思羽) and Singapore's Pang Yew En Koen (馮耀恩) advanced to the quarterfinals after defeating the Spanish duo Alvaro Robles and Maria Xiao (肖瑤茜) 3-1. Chen told the Central News Agency (CNA, 中央社), "This is our first collaboration, I feel relaxed, communication is smooth, and the rhythm matches quite well."
Also, 19-year-old Kao Cheng-jui (高承睿) had a busy day, winning his men's doubles first-round match 3-2 against Hong Kong's Chan Baldwin Ho Wah (陳顥樺) and Yiu Kwan To (姚鈞濤). Kao will compete against Japan's Togami Shunsuke (戶上隼輔) in the evening for a spot in the men's singles round of 16.
Kao and Huang Yan-cheng (黃彥誠) will also face the top-seeded Chinese duo Lin Gaoyuan (林高遠) and Lin Shidong (林詩棟) in the men's doubles round of 16.
