TAIPEI (TVBS News) — The Directorate-General of Budget, Accounting, and Statistics (DGBAS, 主計總處) announced Monday (Sept. 23) that Taiwan's unemployment rate rose to 3.48% in August, marking a 0.03 percentage point increase from July. Despite this rise, the rate remains the lowest for August in 24 years.
The DGBAS attributed the seasonal increase in unemployment from June to August to the graduation season.
In August, the number of employed people reached 11.613 million, up by 2,000 from the previous month. The service sector added 3,000 jobs, while the industrial sector gained 1,000.
In August, the number of unemployed individuals increased by 4,000 to 419,000. The DGBAS noted that the influx of recent graduates and summer job seekers contributed to this rise, with first-time job seekers accounting for an increase of 3,000.
August saw a decrease of 7,000 unemployed individuals compared to last year. By age group, the unemployment rate for those aged 15 to 19 stood at 9.04%, and for those aged 20 to 24, it was 12.21%.
These higher rates are primarily due to first-time job seekers adjusting to the job market during the graduation season. The unemployment rate for individuals aged 25 to 29 was 6.01%, while those aged 30 to 34 had a rate of 3.37%.
