TAIPEI (TVBS News) — The National Land Management Agency (國土署), Ministry of the Interior (MOI, 內政部), emphasized Monday (Sept. 23) that its rental subsidy policy has significantly benefited young renters.
The MOI has allocated NT$335 billion for an expanded rental subsidy plan next year. From 2022 to 2025, the total rental subsidies will reach approximately NT$804 billion, nearing the NT$872 billion budget for the National Housing and Urban Regeneration Center (HURC, 國家住宅及都市更新中心) social housing construction over four years.
Legislator Lo Chih-chiang (羅智強) of the Kuomintang (KMT, 國民黨) criticized the government's housing policy, accusing it of being misguided. He claimed President Lai Ching-te's (賴清德) housing policy had become a cash giveaway and that constructing social housing should be the core of housing justice.
The National Land Management Agency reported that since the rental subsidy policy began in 2022, the number of approved subsidy households increased from 278,000 in 2022 to over 628,000 by the end of August this year. A satisfaction survey for the 2023-2024 rental subsidy showed a 70% approval rate, particularly among young people, who saw their housing burdens reduced by 40% to 50%.
The agency plans to expand the rental subsidy policy once it meets its goal of 200,000 social housing units by the end of this year. It also aims to meet its targets of directly constructing and managing 250,000 units each over eight years.
