TAIPEI (TVBS News) — President Lai Ching-te (賴清德) emphasized the importance of peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait for global prosperity during a ceremony celebrating "Armed Forces Day and All-Out Defense Education Day" (軍人節暨全民國防教育日表揚大會) on Friday (Aug. 30). He reiterated Taiwan's commitment to democracy, sovereignty, and peaceful development.
President Lai highlighted the Navy's 146th Fleet's (海軍146艦隊) crucial role in patrolling the Taiwan Strait. He noted the fleet's readiness to deploy immediately upon receiving orders, often spending more time at sea than on land. He also recognized the Air Force's 1st Tactical Fighter Wing (空軍一聯隊) for its vital air defense duties.
Last week, Lai attended the 66th-anniversary memorial of the August 23 Artillery Battle in Kinmen, where the Ministry of National Defense (MND, 國防部) organized a concert to educate the youth about this historical event.
He stressed Taiwan's role as a peacekeeper, adhering to four principles: safeguarding democracy, defending sovereignty, and ensuring peace in the Taiwan Strait.
President Lai asserted that Taiwan is a peace-loving country and added that true peace comes from strength. He vowed to continue to enhance Taiwan's self-defense capabilities to show the world the country's resolve.
The national defense budget will increase next year to strengthen asymmetric warfare capabilities and improve training, equipment, and care for the military, aiming to build a modern, robust force.
