TAIPEI (TVBS News) — Premier Cho Jung-tai (卓榮泰) announced on Thursday (Aug. 22) plans to invest NT$900 billion by 2030 to accelerate green energy, energy storage, and energy conservation initiatives.
Chairing the National Council for Sustainable Development's 36th Council Meeting, Cho stressed the importance of collective wisdom and innovative thinking to achieve Taiwan's sustainability goals.
To meet the "2050 Net Zero Emissions" target, the central government has allocated NT$116.1 billion for the next fiscal year, marking a 21.6% increase from this year. As his first time chairing the Council Meeting, Cho stated, "I hope everyone will take proactive actions and innovative approaches to ensure Taiwan's sustainable future."
In response to global climate change, Taiwan has adopted the "2050 Net Zero Transition" mission and enacted the Climate Change Response Act in 2023. The Executive Yuan has outlined 12 key strategies and aims to enhance grid resilience to ensure a stable and sustainable energy supply, aiding industries in achieving net-zero and green transformation.
The Presidential Office has established the National Climate Change Committee (國家氣候變遷對策委員會) to serve as a platform for social engagement and policy efficiency. The Executive Yuan's sustainability council will coordinate and integrate national sustainable development policies, promoting cross-ministerial and cross-sectoral action plans.
Cho urged the Ministry of the Interior (MOI, 內政部) to prioritize achieving 50% energy savings in buildings and using zero-carbon renewable energy for electricity to meet the 2050 net-zero building goal.
Taiwan will continue to build on its green building system, promoting smart and green buildings and reducing carbon in construction materials and operations.
