TAIPEI (TVBS News) — The Central Weather Administration (CWA, 中央氣象署) issued a heavy rain alert for 13 counties and cities at 2:50 p.m. on Tuesday (Aug. 20). Penghu County (澎湖縣) faces torrential rain, with warnings for lightning and strong gusts.
Convection cloud systems are developing vigorously, causing short-duration heavy rainfall. The CWA also issued severe thunderstorm information for New Taipei City (新北市), Taoyuan City (桃園市), Taipei City (台北市), Penghu County, and Hsinchu County (新竹縣).
The weather agency has issued a heavy rain warning for the Keelung North Coast (基隆北海岸), Taipei City, New Taipei City, Taoyuan City, Hsinchu County mountain area, Changhua County (彰化縣), Yunlin County (雲林縣), Chiayi City (嘉義市), Chiayi County (嘉義縣), Tainan City (台南市), Kaohsiung City (高雄市), and Yilan County mountain area (宜蘭縣山區).
Taiwan remains under a large low-pressure system with abundant moisture, influenced by persistent southwesterly winds. The central and southern regions, along with Penghu, Kinmen (金門), and Matsu (馬祖), will experience intermittent showers or thunderstorms.
While other regions will generally see cloudy skies in the morning, northern Taiwan and other mountainous areas should prepare for thunderstorms and localized heavy rain in the afternoon.
