TAIPEI (TVBS News) — The Taiwan Public Opinion Foundation (TPOF, 台灣民意基金會) released a poll on Friday (Aug. 16) showing mixed feelings among Taiwanese regarding their participation in the Olympic Games Paris 2024 under the name "Chinese Taipei" (中華台北). The survey revealed that 40% of respondents over 20 years old favored the name, while 42% opposed it.
The foundation highlighted that Taiwan's strong interest in the Olympics is due to its unique international status following the Republic of China's departure from the U.N. in 1971. Since then, Taiwan has remained one of the few countries unable to compete under its own name in the Summer Olympic Games.
Regarding names for international organizations, meetings, or events, 39.9% preferred "Taiwan" (台灣), 22.8% favored "Republic of China" (中華民國), 20% chose "Republic of China, Taiwan" (中華民國台灣), and 8.8% supported "Chinese Taipei," which was indicated in the survey titled as "Taiwanese Opinions About the Olympic Games Paris 2024" (國人對2024巴黎奧運的一些態度).
The poll also revealed varying degrees of support for "Chinese Taipei" in the Olympics: 4.8% liked it very much, 35.5% somewhat liked it, 25.4% disliked it, 16.2% strongly disliked it, 16.7% had no opinion, and 1.4% were unsure.
Additionally, the survey indicated that 74% of Taiwanese over 20 are concerned about their athletes' performance in the Olympic Games Paris 2024, while 22% are not.
Conducted from Aug. 12 to Aug. 14, the poll included 1,075 adults nationwide, with a sampling error of plus or minus 2.99 percentage points at a 95% confidence level. The results were weighted by region, gender, age, and education to reflect the population structure.
