TAIPEI (TVBS News) — Executive Yuan spokesman Chen Shih-kai (陳世凱) emphasized on Saturday (Aug. 10) that the government's commitment to a nuclear-free homeland remains unchanged, expressing regret over the malicious distortion of President Lai Ching-te's (賴清德) statements by some individuals.

Chen's statement was in response to remarks made by President Lai during the inaugural meeting of the National Climate Change Response Committee (國家氣候變遷對策委員會) on two days earlier. At the meeting, President Lai clarified that the nuclear-free homeland is not an ideology of the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP, 民進黨) but a statutory national policy goal, as outlined in Article 23 of the Basic Environment Act (環境基本法). This clarification led to claims from the opposition suggesting a policy shift.

Chen noted that the committee's meeting included active discussions on climate change, power supply and demand, and various green energy issues. He expressed regret that some individuals had maliciously distorted President Lai's comments.

Reiterating the government's stance, Chen emphasized that the nuclear-free homeland initiative remains a national policy, with no changes at present. While the government is open to exploring new nuclear energy technologies or other innovative energy solutions, he stressed that Taiwan's adoption of these technologies will depend on ensuring safety, proper nuclear waste disposal, and achieving national consensus.

Chen assured that the Executive Yuan will continue to prioritize a safe and stable power supply while advancing energy transition, promoting diverse green energy, and reducing air pollution.
