PARIS (TVBS News) — Kuo Hsing-chun (郭婞淳) made history on Thursday (Aug. 8) at the Olympic Games Paris 2024 by winning a bronze medal in the women's 59kg weightlifting event. She became the first Taiwanese athlete to win a medal in three consecutive Olympic Games.
Kuo first competed in the London Olympics in 2012, finishing eighth in the women's 58kg category. She won a bronze medal in the Rio Olympics in 2016 and secured gold in the Tokyo Olympics in the 59kg category. In Paris, Kuo lifted 105kg in the snatch and 130kg in the clean and jerk, totaling 235kg.
The Taiwanese delegation has accumulated one gold and five bronze medals at the current Olympics, making it the second-highest medal count in history, ranking 43rd in the medal tally. The Tokyo Olympics saw Taiwan win a record 12 medals.
Meanwhile, Taiwanese boxer Lin Yu-ting (林郁婷) advanced to the gold medal match in the women's 57kg category after defeating Turkish athlete Esra Yildiz Kahraman on Thursday. This achievement marks the best performance in team history.
On the other hand, Taekwondo athlete Lo Chia-ling (羅嘉翎), who won bronze in Tokyo, faced challenges due to a left foot injury over the past year. She lost 0-2 to Laetitia Aoun of Lebanon in her opening match in Paris.
Golfer Hsu Wei-ling (徐薇淩) improved her standing by shooting a 69 in the second round, placing her tied for 14th. Her total score is 143, one under par. Chien Pei-yun (錢珮芸), another Taiwanese golfer, finished the second round with a score of 71, totaling 147 and tying for 29th place.
