TAIPEI (TVBS News) — The Taipei Egg Merchants Association (台北市蛋商公會) announced a wholesale egg price increase of NT$3 per catty, from NT$38 to NT$41, on Sunday (July 28) due to supply shortages.
Typhoon Gaemi (颱風凱米) has significantly impacted the egg supply by killing at least 600,000 egg-laying chickens in southern and central Taiwan.
This situation, compounded by previous heatwaves, farmers' voluntary molting practices, and the Ministry of Agriculture's culling incentives, has drastically reduced egg availability, driving up prices.
Lin Tien-lai (林天來), the association’s chairman, stated that the decision followed a meeting to address current market demand and supply conditions. Central Taiwan egg farmers noted that Taiwan has over 40 million egg-laying chickens and that current losses remain manageable. However, they acknowledged that the disaster would inevitably affect short-term egg prices.
They also mentioned that the year-end egg supply would largely depend on the severity of avian influenza outbreaks. If no widespread epidemic occurs, the current surplus of chickens should maintain stable egg production.
