TAIPEI (TVBS News) — Legislators passed an amendment to the Labor Standards Act (勞基法) on Monday (July 15), allowing workers aged 65 and older to negotiate with employers to delay mandatory retirement. After extensive discussion, the Legislative Yuan (立法院) approved the third reading of the amendment to Article 54.
The Social Welfare and Environmental Hygiene Committee (立法院社會福利及衛生環境委員會) initially reviewed the amendment on May 15. During the review, former Minister of Labor Hsu Ming-chun (許銘春) noted that current regulations permit such negotiations between employees and employers.
Legislators from various parties debated the proposal before passing the Democratic Progressive Party legislator Wang Cheng-hsu's (王正旭) motion to amend the article. The third reading, completed on Monday, stipulates that workers aged 65 can negotiate with employers to extend their retirement age.
Supporters hope the amendment will encourage healthy and willing senior workers to continue contributing to the workplace.
