TAOYUAN (TVBS News) — China Airlines (中華航空) resumed its Taipei-Seattle route last Sunday (July 14), marking its sixth direct flight destination to the U.S. The airline celebrated the event with passengers at the boarding gate at Taoyuan International Airport (桃園機場), creating a lively atmosphere.

Hsieh Shih-chien (謝世謙), China Airlines chairman, highlighted Seattle as Taiwan's closest gateway city to the U.S. The airline operates five weekly flights and has ordered 24 Boeing 787 Dreamliners, allowing daily flights starting next year.

The resurgence in Taiwan-U.S. travel, bolstered by Southeast Asian transit passengers, has prompted several airlines to establish Seattle routes this summer.

China Airlines' inaugural flight took off at 11:30 p.m. on Sunday, carrying 306 passengers, nearly 90% of its capacity. One passenger, surnamed Liu, celebrated his 16th wedding anniversary with his wife and family, noting that the direct flight saved them 6 to 7 hours compared to connecting through San Francisco.

Hsieh emphasized that this route marks a resumption rather than a maiden flight. China Airlines previously operated the Seattle route in 2004 but suspended it in 2008 due to soaring fuel prices. Seattle remains a crucial gateway, enabling connections to 50 destinations with an 11.5-hour flight from Taiwan.

He also pointed out the industry's current challenge of insufficient capacity due to delayed aircraft deliveries. Manufacturers estimate a three-year timeline to resolve this issue. The 24 Boeing 787s on order will help increase flights on key routes, including Taipei-Seattle.

China Airlines views the Seattle route as a strategic move to expand its North American market. The airline operates five weekly flights using A350-900 aircraft, offering 32 business class, 31 premium economy, and 243 economy seats.
