TAIPEI (TVBS News) — Foreign Minister Lin Chia-lung (林佳龍) announced Wednesday (July 10) that the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA) has launched an investigation into allegations against Taiwan's representative to Fiji, Chen Yin-lien (陳盈連), who has been accused of embezzling public funds. The ministry will send the investigation results to the Agency Against Corruption and has recalled Chen to Taiwan.
Chen allegedly spent NT$600,000 on 88 luxury items in the U.S. for his family in Los Angeles. Lin emphasized that the MOFA will not cover up any misconduct. He urged anyone concerned to use internal complaint channels or write to the minister's mailbox, assuring confidentiality.
Lin took office on May 20 and held his first media gathering on Wednesday afternoon to address recent ministry personnel issues. He stated that while diplomats face significant pressure abroad, effective leadership and management are crucial. The ministry will handle any legal violations appropriately.
Since taking office, Lin has introduced new procurement guidelines, including a price comparison mechanism and a tiered approval process. These measures prioritize embassy procurement needs over residential quarters to prevent future disputes. He also mentioned that the ministry would not shield any wrongdoing.
Still, Lin hoped that false accusations or resolved issues, like the bullying allegations at the U.S. office, would not be perpetuated. He stressed his commitment to ensuring the rights of diplomatic staff and maintaining morale by addressing and clarifying issues promptly.
