TAIPEI (TVBS News) — Minister of National Defense Koo Li-Hsiung (顧立雄) on Wednesday (July 10) addressed criticisms regarding the Ministry of National Defense's (MND, 國防部) notice to temples about the future use of their spaces for ammunition storage. Koo assured the public that the MND would comply with domestic laws and international regulations during the dispersal and pre-storage process.
The MND issued a notice to temples in preparation for the Han Kuang No. 40 Exercise (漢光40號演習) and other defense operations. The notice informed temples that their spaces might be used for pre-storing ammunition for defense operations.
Due to Taiwan's defensive military strategy, Koo emphasized dispersing and pre-storing supplies, such as food and ammunition. He reiterated that the MND will adhere to both national laws and international standards during this process.
On Tuesday, Koo reported to the Legislative Yuan (立法院) about the establishment of the Defense Innovation Unit (DIU, 國防創新小組). He highlighted the public's awareness of maintaining the nation's free and democratic way of life and the commitment to national defense. Koo mentioned that the MND will conduct relevant security checks and assessments for personnel handling classified information.
The Han Kuang Exercise will include the distribution of Rules of Engagement (ROE, 交戰規則) cards to frontline troops. Koo addressed concerns about accountability during accidental incidents in the exercise, stating that the MND will handle such matters according to relevant laws and ensure proper compensation if necessary.
Regarding the Air Force's proposal to establish a combat readiness road in Guanshan Township, Taitung County (台東關山), Koo acknowledged local opposition and stated that the MND will continue to engage in dialogue.
