KAOHSIUNG (TVBS News) — Taiwan's first electronic storage detection dog (K9 ESD) played a crucial role in helping Kaohsiung City Police break through a money laundering case involving an amount as high as NT$5.1 billion allegedly through gambling website operations.

Kaohsiung City Police on Thursday (July 4) announced the bust of the money laundering ring orchestrated by a suspect surnamed Su. After gathering intelligence, the police raided three locations. Notably, the electronic storage detection dog (K9 ESD), Wafer, played a crucial role by sniffing out two key mobile phone pieces of evidence hidden by the suspects.

Handler Wu Li-ling (吳麗玲) explained how Wafer, a 3-year-old black Labrador trained in the U.S., detected the devices. She stated that a chemical called triphenylphosphine oxide is used to coat electronics, which is how Wafer finds them, including cell phones, hard drives, and even crypto-currency hardware wallets".

Since arriving in Taiwan last August, Wafer has assisted in solving three major criminal cases. His keen ability to identify electronic devices has made him an invaluable asset to law enforcement.
