TAOYUAN (TVBS News) — Amid rising living costs, the Taoyuan Police Department (桃園市警察局) continues to sell lunch boxes for NT$60 at its staff cafeteria, a price that has remained unchanged for nearly twenty years.
The staff cafeteria, which has been operating for 43 years, serves breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Breakfast was an all-you-can-eat offer for NT$15 but has since been discontinued.
Now, the cafeteria only serves lunch and dinner. In the past, the cafeteria operated on a table meal system, guaranteeing all-you-can-eat. A person could dine for NT$60, or a table of eight could eat for NT$480. Summer offerings also included soup and cold drinks.
Following the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic, the cafeteria shifted to a lunch box format, but the NT$60 price tag remained. Due to its high cost-performance ratio, the lunch boxes have attracted group purchases from employees of the Taoyuan City Government (桃園市政府) during lunchtime.
Cafeteria head Fan Yang-lung (范揚瀧), a crucial figure behind the cafeteria's operation, will retire on July 16. To honor Fan's hard work, the Taoyuan Police Department held a retirement consolation meeting, where Commissioner Wu Kun-hsu (吳坤旭) personally presented retirement souvenirs and a police badge.
