TAIPEI (TVBS News) — Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) caucus whip Ker Chien-ming (柯建銘) on Wednesday (June 26) delivered a formal request for constitutional interpretation and emergency measures to Yang Hao-chin (楊皓清), director-general of the Constitutional Court Clerk Department.
This submission follows the controversial enactment of parliamentary reform bills by President Lai Ching-te (賴清德) on June 24, which were declared effective immediately along with his intention to seek a constitutional interpretation and temporary measures.
Ker explained that the DPP caucus has been engaged in a heated two-month legislative struggle. He stressed that while the actions taken were ostensibly to uphold the democratic rule of law and the constitutional system, they were actually vital to safeguarding these foundations and national security. He also criticized the opposition Kuomintang (KMT, 國民黨) for their coercive tactics and predicted that they would face overwhelming public backlash.
Expressing respect for the constitutional court's impending decision, Ker voiced his expectation for a definitive ruling. He sharply criticized the KMT for slandering and undermining the court and threatening to slash its budget, equating their behavior to that of gangsters. He accused the KMT of defying the constitution and public opinion yet lacking the courage to oppose China.
