TAIPEI (TVBS News) — The Freeway Bureau of the Ministry of Transportation and Communications (交通部高速公路局) warned on Monday (June 24) that heavy-duty truck accidents are causing significant disruptions on Taiwan's highways.
As of June 18, there have been eight fatal accidents involving these vehicles this year, resulting in 10 deaths and 15 injuries. The bureau emphasized the severe impact of these incidents on road safety and traffic order, noting that the accidents pose substantial risks to life and property.
The bureau pointed out that heavy-duty trucks with a certain load may experience a shifted center of gravity and deteriorated braking performance, compromising driving stability. Additionally, the increased blind spots, if not properly monitored, significantly heighten the risk of accidents.
The bureau strongly urged drivers to maintain focus and exercise caution to safeguard their safety and that of others. Drivers should avoid distractions such as mobile phones, picking up items, or taking both hands off the steering wheel.
Further advice from the bureau includes the necessity for drivers to be well-rested before commencing a journey and to continuously monitor their physical and mental states. If drivers feel fatigued, they should take breaks at service areas, rest stops, or exit the highway as needed.
Moreover, drivers are reminded to evenly distribute and securely fasten their cargo, adhere to vehicle dimension and weight limits, obey speed regulations, and slow down when maneuvering turns.
