TAIPEI (TVBS News) — As Taiwan marks the summer solstice on Friday (June 21), the Central Weather Administration (CWA) has forecast scorching temperatures potentially rising to 36 degrees Celsius. The CWA also warned of possible afternoon thunderstorms in northern and eastern regions, including Yilan and Hualien County. This morning, the agency issued heat warnings for ten municipalities, signaling an intense heatwave across the island.

An orange signal, which indicates continuous high temperatures around 36°C, is in effect for Changhua County, Yunlin County, Tainan City, and Pingtung County. A yellow signal warning of similar conditions covers Taipei City, New Taipei City, Taoyuan City, Nantou County, Kaohsiung City, and Hualien County. The weather pattern, influenced by a strong high-pressure system over the Pacific, is mostly clear to cloudy skies, with an increased likelihood of thunderstorms, particularly in the northern and eastern mountainous regions.

The CWA expects the high-pressure system to persist, keeping the weather sunny and hot, generally between 32°C and 35°C over the next two days. Areas near the mountains in the island's western half and the East Longitudinal Valley may experience spikes up to 36 degrees. This trend indicates expanding areas of intense heat as the solstice passes.
