TAIPEI (TVBS News) — The Taiwan Affairs Office (TAO) reiterated on Wednesday (June 12) China's plans to reopen tourism between the two sides, first mentioned on April 28.
TAO spokesperson Chen Binhua criticized the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) for refusing to lift the ban on tour groups traveling to China, claiming it deprives Taiwanese people of their legitimate rights and severely harms the interests of Taiwan's tourism industry.
Chen warmly welcomed Taiwanese compatriots who visited China for tourism and cultural experiences, highlighting their eagerness to share their cultural heritage and development.
During Kuomintang (KMT) legislator Fu Kun-chi's visit in early May, China's Ministry of Culture and Tourism also announced that Fujian residents would be allowed to travel to Matsu. The ministry added that plans are underway to resume group tours from Fujian to Taiwan following the restart of direct ferry services from Pingtan to Taiwan.
Despite the enthusiasm, a planned tour group from Fuzhou to Matsu for the Dragon Boat Festival (June 10) was postponed due to significant festival activities in Fuzhou, indicating the complexities of resuming cross-strait tourism.
However, Chen remains optimistic about the future of cross-strait exchanges, including tourism, underscoring the mainland's consistent support for cooperation in various fields.
The ongoing dialogue and efforts to resume tourism and cultural exchanges reflect a hopeful outlook for improved relations and mutual understanding between Taiwan and mainland China.
