TAIPEI (TVBS News) — The Central Weather Administration (中央氣象署, CWA) issued a heavy rain alert for Tainan City (台南市) and Kaohsiung City (高雄市) early Tuesday (June 12), warning of localized thunderstorms in southern Taiwan due to the influence of the southwest monsoon.

Meteorologist Wu Der-rong (吳德榮) cautioned that Taiwan should brace for sporadic strong convective development from now until next Tuesday (June 18), with a risk of severe weather conditions.

Unstable Weather Patterns Ahead
According to the latest simulations by the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF), a stationary front will linger over the northern seas until next Tuesday (June 18), placing Taiwan within a warm air mass ahead of the front.

Wu pointed out that the southwest winds, carrying warm and moist air, will make the atmospheric conditions highly unstable, especially in the southwest part of the island where sporadic rainfall is likely.

Localized Rainfall and Thunderstorms
Today, the central and southern parts of Taiwan experienced mostly sunny to cloudy skies with occasional rain, though the frequency of rainfall has decreased compared to Monday (June 11).

The central region, Miaoli, and the outlying islands of Penghu (澎湖), Kinmen (金門), and Matsu (馬祖) will see localized brief showers or thunderstorms.

The Greater Taipei area, the northeastern region, and other mountainous areas will also be at risk of brief thunderstorms this afternoon, with the south and mountainous regions across the island potentially facing heavy rainfall.

Wu Der-rong urged the public to stay updated with real-time information from the CWA and to be vigilant against threats such as landslides, falling rocks, and mudslides due to accumulated rainfall in mountainous areas.

As the weather remains unpredictable, residents and visitors in affected areas are advised to take necessary precautions.
