TAIPEI (TVBS News) — In response to privacy concerns raised by the Kuomintang (KMT), Kaohsiung Mayor Chen Chi-mai (陳其邁) defended the use of mobile signal positioning for public services like smart transportation in Kaohsiung on Thursday (May 30). He emphasized the importance of anonymization and compliance with personal data protection laws.
Privacy and Public Service
Mayor Chen addressed accusations from the KMT that the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) had been monitoring individuals through mobile phones and analyzing personal data outside the Legislative Yuan and at concerts in Kaohsiung. He argued that anonymized data could enhance the efficiency of crowd dispersal at events and that smart transportation solutions must anonymize data in accordance with personal data protection regulations.
Experience Across Cities
He further noted that New Taipei City and Tainan City have successfully used anonymized information in smart transportation for events, showcasing Taiwan's extensive experience in this area. Mayor Chen's statements underline a commitment to leveraging technology for public benefit while ensuring privacy protections are in place.
