TAIPEI (TVBS News) — In the face of domestic abuse, foreign spouses in Taiwan often find themselves in a difficult position, torn between seeking justice and the fear of deportation.

Tina, a survivor who preferred to use an alias, emphasized this dilemma, stating, "For foreign spouses facing domestic abuse, taking legal action is challenging because losing the case could result in deportation. Thus, we are often reluctant to report such instances."

Tina's story sheds light on the harsh reality endured by many. Recounting her experience, she revealed enduring abuse for years until her child also became a victim, prompting her to seek help.

Recognizing the plight of abused mothers, The Garden of Hope Foundation launched a workshop offering employment opportunities, aiming to help domestic abuse victims rebuild their lives. Hsieh Ching-wen, coordinator at the Linkou Service Center, noted, "When they leave an abusive environment, they often face poverty. Therefore, we provide housing and employment services." Hsieh noted that these mothers show exceptional resilience when relevant support measures are available.

Statistics from the Ministry of Health and Welfare reveal a concerning trend, with reported domestic violence cases increasing annually. In 2022 alone, 156,000 cases were reported, with intimate partner violence accounting for nearly half of them.

Despite facing challenges, many victims of abuse endure their suffering silently, often out of concern for their children. Recognizing this dilemma, the foundation not only provides safety assistance for victims but also offers counseling for perpetrators, acknowledging the importance of addressing communication issues.

Efforts to repair relationships can lead to gradual improvements in some abusive situations. Director Li Yu-hua emphasized the importance of involving fathers in the healing process, stating, "We also strongly encourage their husbands, their children's fathers, to come here to see them."

Hopefully, the provision of support and resources will empower domestic abuse survivors to speak out bravely, breaking the harmful cycle and restoring hope in their lives.
