TAIPEI (TVBS News) — Taiwan's Presidential Office Spokesperson, Kuo Ya-hui, criticized on Thursday (May 23) China's unilateral military provocations, stating they threaten Taiwan's democracy, freedom, and regional peace and stability.
In a significant escalation of tensions, China commenced a military exercise named "Joint Sword 2024A" around Taiwan, including the Kinmen and Matsu areas, at 7:45 a.m.
The Eastern Theater Command of the People's Liberation Army's spokesperson, Li Xi, described the drills as a stern warning and punishment against "Taiwan independence" separatist forces and external interference.
This move has heightened concerns over the potential for increased military tensions in the region. Kuo Ya-hui emphasized that maintaining regional peace and stability is a shared responsibility across the strait.
She assured that Taiwan's national security team and military have a comprehensive grasp of the situation and are confident in their ability to protect national security against external challenges.
Taiwan's Ministry of National Defense (MND) condemned China's actions as domineering and expressed regret over the provocations that undermine regional peace and stability.
It vowed to take concrete actions to safeguard freedom, democracy, and the sovereignty of the Republic of China (Taiwan). This firm stance underscores Taiwan's commitment to defending its democratic values and territorial integrity amidst growing military pressures.
As tensions continue to rise, the international community watches closely, hoping for a peaceful resolution that ensures the stability of the region and the safety of its inhabitants.
