SYDNEY (TVBS News) — The Taipei Economic and Cultural Office, Brisbane, Australia confirmed on Friday (May 3) that a Taiwanese woman reported missing the previous day has been found.
Queensland police in Australia had issued a missing person's alert on Thursday for Yu-Ming Lu. It is understood that Lu was lured abroad by a scam and was preparing to leave Australia. Fortunately, she was rescued from the airport before boarding her flight. The Taiwanese office in Australia is urging Taiwanese tourists to be vigilant against scams to protect their rights.
Lu entered Australia on a tourist visa on April 6, 2024, and was studying at Browns English Language School in Brisbane. Her last known location was at a student dormitory on Wharf Street around 10:20 p.m. local time on April 29. She had not been in contact with her family or anyone else since 8 a.m. on April 30.
The four Taiwanese offices in Australia are also reminding Taiwanese tourists to follow the "Listen, Hang up, Verify" strategy, known as "Scam Prevention Strategy 123," to protect their rights. They are advised to be suspicious of requests for money transfers or personal information and not immediately follow instructions. They are also encouraged to contact local anti-scam hotlines, report lines, or overseas offices for assistance.
