TAIPEI (TVBS News) — Kuomintang (KMT) caucus whip Fu Kun-chi is set to lead a delegation of about 10 legislators to Beijing after the legislative session concludes on Friday (April 26), with a return to Taiwan scheduled for April 28.
Fu emphasized that he would depart only after the session ends on Friday, hinting that the "main event is on Saturday."
The purpose of the visit, Fu said, is to defuse tensions and emphasize cross-strait peace, regardless of political affiliation. He expressed hope to reconnect the severed ties between the two sides after eight years. Fu believes neither the U.S. nor Japan desires a war or Taiwan's independence. He criticized the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) for its inability to progress, accusing it of deceiving the people of Taiwan.
Fu pointed out that Hualien is facing an unprecedented crisis, with industries possibly going bankrupt. He stressed the need for new customers and vitality, warning that without good communication, mainland China is unlikely to allow tourists to visit Taiwan.
Fu described the trip to the mainland as a journey towards breaking the ice and fostering peace, expressing hope to ease tensions and enable Chinese tourists to visit Taiwan freely. He downplayed the significance of whom he would meet, emphasizing instead the importance of building Taiwan's goodwill and anticipating a reciprocal response from mainland China.
Despite Fu's firm statements, both the DPP and many Taiwanese online users have questioned his close ties with the Chinese government. They believe that genuine 'goodwill' can only be demonstrated by the Chinese Communist Party abandoning its aggressive stance towards Taiwan.
