HUALIEN (TVBS News) — Taiwan was rocked by a series of earthquakes on Tuesday (April 23), with magnitudes of 6.0 and 6.3 recorded in the early hours, followed by four more tremors, the largest of which reached 5.8.
Experts have linked these seismic events to the main quake that occurred on April 3, noting that they all originated from the same fault system. However, the increase in aftershocks is considered unusual and is being closely monitored.
Professor Lee Chyi-tyi of the National Central University's Graduate Institute of Applied Geology expressed concern over the abnormal increase in aftershocks. He pointed out that the fault location of the earthquake in Shoufeng Township, Hualien County, the day before, and the main quake on April 3, were from the same fault system. Typically, aftershocks from large earthquakes are concentrated in the first few days following the main event, after which the frequency begins to slow down, with random tremors occurring daily.
Lee reminded the public that Taiwan has been in a period of frequent seismic activity over the past decade and urged everyone to be prepared for disaster prevention.
Director Wu Chien-fu of the Central Weather Administration (CWA) Seismological Center stated that these earthquakes were all aftershocks of the Hualien earthquake on April 3. He explained that these are normal occurrences as part of the energy release process, and that the epicenter has gradually "moved inland".
