HUALIEN (TVBS News) — A 5.5 magnitude earthquake struck Shoufeng Township in Hualien County at 5:08 p.m. on Monday (April 22), according to the Central Weather Administration (CWA).
The quake's epicenter was 10 kilometers deep, the CWA stated.
The quake was felt across the island, with the highest intensity recorded at level 4 in Hualien County and Nantou County. Taichung City and Yilan County experienced a maximum intensity of level 3, while the rest of the counties and cities reported intensities between levels 1 and 2.
Following the initial quake, four more tremors were recorded at 5:09 p.m., 5:12 p.m., 5:15 p.m., and 5:17 p.m., all centered in Shoufeng Township, Hualien County. The maximum intensity for these subsequent quakes reached level 4 in Hualien County.
In response to the seismic activity, the CWA issued a disaster prevention warning (national-level alert) for Hualien County.
