TAIPEI (TVBS News) — Premier Chen Chien-jen defended Taiwan Power Co. (Taipower) President Wang Yao-ting's resignation announcement, attributing it to false accusations about power supply issues. The premier's comments came amid recent public dissatisfaction due to a power outage in Taoyuan.

Wang initially planned to resign but later announced he would stay during a press conference. Premier Chen praised Taipower's emergency response to the outage and revealed he had personally called and texted Wang, encouraging him to "continue to work hard for Taipower and Taiwan's power supply."

Chen believes the main reason for the power shortage is well-known and emphasized that the government already had a comprehensive energy policy in place when the April 3 earthquake struck. This includes the development of renewable energy and the enhancement of backup power equipment.

The premier stressed that foreign media and power industry experts have highly praised Taiwan's power supply resilience and its ability to restore power in a short time.

Chen pointed out that recent brief power outages in some small areas due to distribution system failures have significantly decreased compared to a decade ago, with over 15,000 fewer incidents annually.
