HUALIEN (TVBS News) — Following the 7.2-magnitude earthquake that struck Hualien a week ago, a broad range of groups, including government agencies, corporations, and individuals, have come forward to offer support. The TSMC Charity Foundation, under the leadership of Chairwoman Sophie Chang, has been particularly active in providing rapid aid to those in urgent need.
On Tuesday morning (April 9), Chang and a team of TSMC professionals assessed the earthquake damage in Hualien. The charity has prioritized public needs over areas already receiving government assistance. "We won't interfere with government aid efforts, but regarding the public's needs, we can provide faster assistance," Chang said, highlighting the foundation's quick response capability.
This initiative demonstrates TSMC's comprehensive commitment to disaster relief. "We are at the front lines of everything we do. We evaluate the situation and then make the calls. We brought our team here today. They are all from the factory, and they're all here," Chang underscored the foundation's hands-on approach to aid.
The earthquake's impact on the community has been significant, with many residents expressing fear and distress over their damaged homes. Chang's personal visits aimed to mitigate physical and emotional suffering.
The Executive Yuan's disaster relief fund for Hualien has garnered impressive support, with donations reaching NT$326 million, a notable increase from the day before. The effort, concluding on May 3, demonstrates widespread solidarity with the victims.
Furthermore, Japan's contribution of ¥190 million in donations showcases the strong ties and mutual support between Taiwan and Japan, reinforcing international cooperation in times of need.
