TAIPEI (TVBS News) — Ma Ying-jeou Foundation Director Hsiao Hsu-tsen said on Wednesday (March 27) that Premier Chen Chien-jen's call for Ma to assert that "Taiwan is a sovereign independent country" violates the Constitution of the Republic of China (ROC).

Ma is set to lead a delegation to China on April 1. Chen recently urged Ma to assert sovereignty in front of Chinese President Xi Jinping.

Hsiao believes it is impossible for Ma to convey the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) and Chen's pro-independence stance, stating the biggest crisis Taiwan currently faces is the DPP's disregard for the ROC Constitution.

Hsiao accused the DPP of secretly pursuing a pro-independence agenda while publicly claiming to maintain the status quo and lacking the courage to amend the constitution openly.

Meanwhile, China's Taiwan Affairs Office (TAO) spokesperson, Chen Binhua, has yet to confirm whether a second meeting between Ma and Xi will take place.
