TAIPEI (TVBS News) — A 37-year-old navy officer, surnamed Huang, drove his car into the Nanliao Fishing Harbor in Kaohsiung's Mituo District with his dementia-stricken mother on board on March 24. Huang was rescued from the submerged vehicle, conscious, and was immediately rushed to the hospital for treatment.
However, his 68-year-old mother was pulled from the water, showing no signs of life. Despite emergency medical efforts, she was pronounced dead at the hospital. On the morning of March 25, an autopsy was conducted at the Kaohsiung Funeral Home. Huang's elder brother was present to identify the body and witness the procedure.
The motive behind Huang's actions remains unclear. Police are investigating whether Huang, worried about the future care of his ailing mother, may have caused the incident intentionally. The exact reason for the plunge into the harbor is still under investigation.
Authorities are also probing whether Huang violated his mother's wishes or if she consented to a joint suicide, which could implicate Huang in charges of homicide or aiding suicide. The police are seeking further clarification on these matters.
