NEW TAIPEI (TVBS News) — Minister of the Interior and former Keelung Mayor Lin Yu-chang said on Monday (March 18) that he believes the citizens will make their judgment in response to current Keelung Mayor George Hsieh's push for free electric scooters for youth.
Hsieh is facing a recall initiated by locals due to disputes over the property rights of the E-Square mall and related policy reversals. The recall has already passed the first stage threshold within a few days.
Meanwhile, the Keelung City Government unveiled a new youth electric scooter plan, which included an option for no monthly battery fees, initially limited to 2,000 vehicles last Friday.
The cap, however, was lifted the following day. However, the timing of the plan's launch, close to the first stage of the recall's success, has sparked intense debate.
Lin, who has recently engaged in multiple verbal confrontations with Hsieh, was interviewed before the legislative meeting today.
Responding to criticisms that Hsieh is buying votes with his policy, he said, "I believe the citizens have their measure in their hearts, and they will make their judgement."
