TAIPEI (TVBS News) — Students from the University of Chicago visited the TVBS News office on Tuesday (March 12), exploring Taiwan's media landscape and the global interest in issues related to the island, such as military affairs and cross-strait tensions.
Over their two-hour tour, the students from the Committee on International Relations, Associate Director Dr. Matthias Staisch, and Associate Instructional Professor Dr. Burcu Pinar Alakoc navigated through various studios, gaining insights into the workflow of traditional news outlets.
Chan Yi-yi, vice president of the TVBS News division, engaged with the students, highlighting the core values that guide traditional media practices. "TVBS News isn't solely about offering local perspectives on news stories but also emphasizes the rigorous fact-checking that underpins each article," she stated.
She further noted, "While TVBS News embraces new technologies and utilizes social media to share news, our primary focus is on extending the professional standards of cable news into the digital realm."
Students expressed curiosity about TVBS News' approach to sensitive topics like military affairs and cross-strait relations, especially how these are portrayed compared to other global media outlets.
Responding to this, Dimitri Bruyas, head of the TVBS English Department, remarked, "We provide our audience with additional context by illustrating how Taiwan's political dynamics influence these global matters."
"In today's AI-driven era, it's crucial for outlets like TVBS to uphold a journalist-centric approach to news production," he continued. "This involves equipping reporters with advanced tools while ensuring they retain editorial control over the content."
TVBS World Taiwan is dedicated to creating content for international audiences about Taiwan, while also assisting global media in offering comprehensive reports on issues central to the island.
