TAIPEI (TVBS News) — Former Taiwanese president Ma Ying-jeou on Saturday (Feb. 17) stated that maritime incidents, such as the recent accidental death of two fishermen from a Chinese vessel in Taiwanese waters, are inevitable and should be handled legally and fairly.

The speedboats trespassed into Kinmen waters for two consecutive days, leading to a tense standoff.

On Feb. 14, the speedboat capsized as it resisted inspection, leading to the death of two crew members.

Furthermore, on Feb. 15, Kinmen fishermen discovered yet another speedboat with no name, no ship certificate, and no port registration, illegally fishing in the waters.

Ma believes the main factor contributing to the tension between the two regions is the refusal of Taiwan's government to engage in dialogue with China.

In his view, it is difficult to imagine the current situation, given the manifold shared interests between the two sides.

He stressed that dialogue is the only solution to resolving the contentious issues.

The consequence of the recent maritime incidents has heightened the delicate situation between Taiwan and China, reaffirming the need for legal protocols and direct conversations.
