TAIPEI (TVBS News) — The results of the initial round of voting for the Legislative speaker are freshly out. Notably, Han Kuo-yu from the Kuomintang (KMT) and You Si-kun from the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) have made it to the second round with 54 and 51 votes respectively.
In this competition for the roles of legislative speaker and deputy speaker, the KMT put forward Han Kuo-yu and Johnny Chiang. On the other hand, the DPP candidates were You Si-kun and Tsai Chi-chang. The Taiwan People's Party (TPP) proposed Huang Shan-shan and Chang Chi-kai.
In a strategy to prevent defection, KMT lawmakers opted for open balloting. At noon, when the results were announced, Han Kuo-yu garnered 54 votes, You Si-kun 51, and Huang Shan-shan seven. One vote was embroiled in controversy due to ink stains on the ballot and was eventually deemed invalid.
Significantly, the open ticket strategy adopted by the KMT proved effective as the results came out in their favor. Since neither Han Kuo-yu nor You Si-kun received more than half of the votes, a second round of voting will transpire this afternoon. The TPP will not participate in the second round.
