TAIPEI (TVBS News) — President-elect Lai Ching-te of the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) engaged in a virtual call with the new Marshall Islands President Hilda Heine on Wednesday (Jan. 24).
Both leaders celebrated the successful elections in their respective nations in 2024, symbolizing shared universal values of democracy, freedom, and human rights while turning a new page in history.
President Heine congratulated Taiwan on its democratic election and praised it as a beacon of democracy for Asia and the world while expressing hope to attend Lai's inauguration ceremony in May.
During the call, Lai noted that 2024 marked the 26th year of diplomatic relations between Taiwan and the Marshall Islands, highlighting successful cooperation in agriculture, healthcare, renewable energy, education, climate change adaptation, and information technology.
Lai expressed his intention to work with the Marshall Islands in building resilient systems to tackle climate change.
