KAOHSIUNG (TVBS News) — As a cold front hit Taiwan's southern city, Kaohsiung, on Tuesday (Jan. 22), Shoushan Zoo caretakers found various ways to keep their animals warm.
In particular, one orangutan named "Mimi" received positive reactions from social media users as she was photographed wrapping herself in a blanket to stave off the cold.
Kaohsiung experienced a low temperature of 11 degrees Celsius on Tuesday and as a result, Shoushan Zoo staff worked diligently from early morning to find ways to safeguard their charges from the cold.
This included installing heat lamps and ensuring the animals had high-caloric foods.
Chuang Hsuan-chih, the director of Shoushan Zoo, stated that following the cold snap, officials provided the orangutans with blankets not only for warmth but also for their entertainment.
Chuang noted that an orangutan's intelligence is similar to that of a preschool child. They cover themselves with blankets and even imitate the staff's movements, such as cleaning windows, he added.
In addition to orangutans, the zoo also ensured the comfort of other animals — including reptiles, birds, and sloths — which are also susceptible to the cold.
Keepers installed heat lamps and provided high-caloric meals to help the animals store more fat and survive the cold winter months.
